Vasyliw/Wasyliw - Ss. Constantine and Helena

Saints Constantine and Helena Ukrainian Catholic church of Vasyliw / Wasyliw

The Church of SS. Constantine and Helena in Vasyliw stands as a significant landmark of early Ukrainian Catholic settlement in Saskatchewan. Constructed in 1906 on a two-acre parcel of land purchased the year prior, the church is among the oldest and smallest in the Eparchy. Built entirely through the voluntary labour of parishioners at a cost of just $500, it reflects the determination and faith of a pioneering community. The parish grew steadily in its early years, with the church being blessed in 1913, followed by notable visits in the decades that followed, including a 50th anniversary celebration in 1960 marked by a solemn Divine Liturgy.

The building itself is a simple log structure measuring just 24 by 16 feet, later finished with painted siding and topped with a shingled gable roof and small central cupola. Inside, the church maintains traditional Eastern Christian elements, including an iconostasis separating the sanctuary from the nave, which contains wooden pews for approximately 40 parishioners. A small choir loft overlooks the interior, while lighting by candles and heating from a wood-burning stove preserve the building’s historic atmosphere. The iconostasis, added in 1921, further enhanced the sacred space and remains a testament to the craftsmanship of the community.

Surrounding the church are several features that speak to the life of the parish over the decades. A cross commemorates a Holy Mission held in 1918, while a belfry constructed in 1954 houses a bell purchased through parish fundraising. Nearby, a parish hall built in 1947 and later expanded served as a gathering place for community events. Just beyond lies the parish cemetery. The name “Vasyliw,” meaning “near the home of Vasyliw,” honors one of the founding families and reflects the deep personal roots tied to this enduring place of worship.
