Orolow - Descent of the Holy Spirit

Ukrainian Catholic church in Orolow, Saskatchewan.

The Church of the Descent of the Holy Spirit in Orolow, Saskatchewan, is the first church established by the parish and was constructed in 1910 on land donated by Stephan Tesluik after the death of his child, as there was no nearby cemetery. Enlarged and renovated in 1948, the church stands as a testament to the dedication and faith of its Ukrainian Catholic community. Built in a cruciform shape with a shingled gable roof and a small central cupola, the wooden structure rests on a low basement. Its exterior is covered in imitation brick asphalt siding, with arched rectangular windows. The main entrance, located on the west side, opens directly into the main area without a vestibule.

Inside, the church features a sanctuary with a main altar, a choir loft accessible by stairs, and traditional holy images including glass-mounted oil prints of the church’s patron, the Holy Mother of God, and Christ Who Loves Mankind. The walls are finished in painted wood siding, and the floor is carpeted along the central aisle and sanctuary area. A vaulted ceiling enhances the interior space, and the wooden pews accommodate around 90 parishioners. The church is equipped with electricity and central oil heating. Built entirely through volunteer labor and donations, the total construction cost was $2,800. Nearby are two mission crosses, a bell on a post frame, a parish hall built in 1953, and the parish cemetery. The church, part of the Saskatoon Deanery, continues to serve the faithful in this historically Ukrainian community.
