North Southey - Zion Lutheran

Built in 1926, this historic rural church near Southey stands as a lasting symbol of the region’s German heritage.

Standing at a quiet gravel crossroad near Southey, Saskatchewan, the historic Zion (North Southey) Lutheran Church rises above the surrounding prairie landscape.  Completed in 1926, the wood-frame church was built with a prominent steeple and topped with a cross. The building’s simple but elegant design features Gothic-arched windows and a centrally placed entrance that give the structure a balanced and symmetrical appearance.

The church’s heritage value is closely tied to the German-speaking Austrian settlers who established farms in the surrounding area in the early 20th century. Many of these families had immigrated from the far regions of the Austrian Empire and brought with them their Lutheran faith and traditions. The congregation itself was organized in 1910, long before the present church building was constructed.

For decades, the church served as a vital spiritual and cultural centre for the community. Regular services were conducted in German until the 1960s, reflecting the language and traditions of the early settlers who built and supported the congregation.

Architectural details add character to the otherwise modest structure. Decorative dentil moulding forms a band around the steeple, providing visual contrast against the church’s clean lines. This decorative element is echoed inside the building along the top of a low wall that encloses the organ loft. The interior also features panelling, a raised pulpit, and a wooden stairway leading to the loft, details that define the church’s simple but carefully crafted interior.

The basement, which would have been used for sunday school, community gatherings, lunches/dinners and other events, is no longer able to be used. With structural issues with the walls, the congregation decided to fill in the basement with dirt. This full basement is now a sub-basement.

Because of its prominent location at a rural crossroads, Zion (North Southey) Lutheran Church has long served as a recognizable landmark on the prairie. Today, the church is recognized as a Municipal Heritage Property and remains an active place for occasional services.
