Kelliher – Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary

Abandoned rural Ukrainian Church near Kelliher, Saskatchewan.

The Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary near Kelliher is the first church of its parish. What began as a mission post eventually grew into an established parish, and in 1942, the dedicated parishioners came together to construct the church that still stands today.

Built from wood in a simple rectangular design, the church features two front towers topped with small cupolas. It is oriented along an east-west axis, with the sanctuary on the eastern end and a small adjoining porch-sacristy to the south. A choir loft is located at the west end. At the base of each tower are two small multi-purpose rooms, compensating for the church's lack of a basement or rectory. Inside, there are fourteen wooden pews, providing seating for approximately sixty parishioners. Nearby, a metal mission cross on a concrete base commemorates the Holy Mission. The church grounds also include a parish cemetery.

Ukrainian settlers had begun arriving in the Kelliher area between 1928 and 1934, coming from various regions of Canada.

Today, the Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary remains part of the Ukrainian Catholic parish under the pastoral care of Ituna.
