Dana - St. John the Baptist

Abandoned Ukrainian Catholic church in Dana, Saskatchewan.

The Church of St. John the Baptist in Dana, Saskatchewan, is the second church built to serve the local Ukrainian Catholic parish.

The original church, constructed in 1915, stood two miles west of Dana. Initially a simple rectangular structure, it was later modified into a cruciform design. As the congregation grew, a larger church was needed, and in 1945 construction began on a new building.

This second church was originally erected on the same site as the first. However, due to poor road access, it was relocated in 1946 to a four-lot parcel in the western part of Dana. The current church is a wood-frame rectangular structure featuring a shingled gable roof and three small frontal cupolas. Both the interior and exterior are finished with painted wood siding. Entry is through a separately roofed porch-vestibule.

Inside, the church features an elevated sanctuary flanked by two sacristies. Opposite the sanctuary is a choir loft, accessible by a stairway from the nave. The interior is adorned with several traditional religious artworks: a patronal painting above the main altar, two additional paintings behind the altar, images flanking the sanctuary within the nave, and depictions of the Holy Mother with the Christ Child and of St. Joseph on the west wall. All were rendered in oil on canvas by unknown artists.

The church seats approximately 85 people on wooden pews and is equipped with electric lighting and central gas heating. The site for the church was acquired by the parishioners at a nominal cost. Construction, completed at an estimated $12,000, was made possible through collective fundraising and the voluntary labor of the parish community.

Adjacent to the church stands a wooden mission cross commemorating a Holy Mission, as well as a nearby belfry. The parish cemetery, located one mile west of the church, spans 10 acres and is jointly owned by the Ukrainian Catholic and Roman Catholic communities. It was established in 1911.

St. John the Baptist Ukrainian Catholic Parish in Dana was under the pastoral care of the Eparchy of Saskatoon. The church is no longer in use for worship; it has since been sold and is now privately owned.
