Borshchiw - Sts Peter and Paul

Borshchiw Sts. Peter and Paul Ukrainian Catholic Church in Saskatchewan.

The Borshchiv Church of SS. Peter and Paul, located near Prud’homme, was constructed in 1947 and serves as the second church of the parish. The original church was a small wooden structure built in 1907 by the parish’s founding Ukrainian settlers on a hilly two-acre site. When the new church was completed in 1947, the first building was repurposed as a parish hall. However, this original structure was later destroyed by fire, and a new hall was built nearby. Today, there is no hall still standing. The name of the parish reflects the settlers’ origins in Borshchiv County, Ukraine, with the church now falling under the Ukrainian Catholic Deanery of Saskatoon.

The present church is a wood-framed rectangular building resting on a high concrete basement. It features a high shingled gable roof with two frontal towers and rectangular windows topped with semi-circular arches. Entry is through a small vaulted porch-vestibule. Inside, the church has a vaulted ceiling, an elevated sanctuary with the main altar, adjoining sacristies, and a choir loft. Seating is provided by wooden pews for approximately 90 people. The church is illuminated by candles and heated with a coal-burning furnace, reflecting the modest, traditional character of the parish.

In 1953, the interior of the church was enhanced with artistic murals and decorative elements, adding beauty and spiritual depth to the worship space. A belfry originally built in 1907 was renovated in 1947 to accompany the new church. The parish cemetery is located just beyond the church grounds, serving as a resting place for generations of parishioners. The Borshchiv church remains a symbol of faith and cultural heritage for the Ukrainian Catholic community in the area.
