Arran-Vesna - Sts Peter and Paul

Saints Peter and Paul Ukrainian Catholic church if Arran - Vesna

Near Arran, Saskatchewan, the Arran–Vesna Ukrainian Catholic Church of SS. Peter and Paul reflects a deep-rooted sense of faith and community. The parish was first established in 1910, when settlers built a modest cruciform church. The original structure featured a central blind dome and quickly became a spiritual cornerstone for the local Ukrainian community.

By 1961, the original church had served its purpose and was carefully dismantled, making way for the present building constructed on the same site. The new church, built through the dedication and generosity of parishioners, cost approximately $10,000—raised through donations and volunteer labour.

The current structure is modest yet rich in character. Built of wood and set on a low concrete basement, the rectangular church is crowned with a cupola above the front roofline, echoed by smaller cupolas on its twin front towers. Inside, warm wood panelling lines the walls and angled ceiling, while traditional religious prints add to the atmosphere. A small choir loft overlooks the nave, and the intimate space—seating around 40 people—creates a close-knit setting for worship. Despite its simplicity, the church is equipped with electrical lighting and oil heating, blending practicality with tradition.

Nearby, a two-bell wooden belfry—dating back to the original 1910 church—still stands as a link to the past, having been renovated alongside the newer building. Just across the road lies the parish cemetery, a quiet resting place for generations of families who shaped the community. The name “Vesna,” meaning “spring,” was added to distinguish the parish from nearby Arran, but it also fittingly symbolizes renewal—an enduring theme in the history of this small yet resilient prairie church.

When we photographed this church it had moved to a new foundation and was undergoing renovations.
