Albertown - Sts. Peter and Paul

Albertown Ukrainian Catholic Catholic church in Saskatchewan.

The Albertown Church of SS. Peter and Paul, built in 1927 near Hafford, Saskatchewan, stands as the second church serving the local Ukrainian Catholic parish. The parish's original church, dedicated to the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, was constructed in 1912 by early Ukrainian settlers and Roman Catholics. This first church was later relocated by the Roman Catholic community to their own land, with their bishop reimbursing the Ukrainian community for construction costs. The current church, built on the original site, was named after Saints Peter and Paul and has since been a focal point of religious life.

Architecturally, the church is a modest, rectangular wooden structure with a low concrete foundation and a shingled gable roof topped by two metal crosses. The exterior features narrow wood siding and rectangular windows with sharply arched tops, while a semicircular window marks the front entrance. The design is simple yet reflective of traditional styles, both in its structure and symbolic elements.

The church interior is defined by its vaulted ceiling and wooden flooring, with seating for approximately 40 people. Lit by candles and heated by a wood-burning stove, the church remains a humble yet enduring place of worship. Its construction was made possible entirely through the donations and volunteer labor of parishioners, who also landscaped the grounds, planted a shelterbelt, and designated space for a cemetery, highlighting the strong communal spirit of the early settlers.

In 1948, a post bell tower was erected near the church, accompanied by a large wooden cross and the parish cemetery extending behind the property. Ukrainian settlers, mainly from Sokal County, began arriving in the area around 1908. The SS. Peter and Paul Church in Albertown has stood for over 75 years, symbolizing the enduring faith and resilience of its founding community. It currently belongs to the Ukrainian Catholic Deanery of Saskatoon.
