The Kipling and District Historical Society was established in the early 1970s as part of a research initiative focused on Hungarian communities in Saskatchewan. One of its long-standing projects has been the development of the Kipling Museum, dedicated to preserving the history and legacy of the region's early pioneers.
Designated as a Municipal Heritage Property, the museum is a vital cultural site in Kipling. It features a collection of six historic wood-frame buildings, along with two non-contributing structures, forming the core of the museum complex. Since opening in 1982, the museum has provided a space to explore the everyday lives, work, and traditions of early settlers in the region.
The heritage value of the museum lies in its authentic representation of early life in the Kipling area. The buildings have been relocated or carefully reconstructed on-site to reflect the types of structures that once stood in the region. Each building tells a story of the community’s social, cultural, and economic development.
Featured Buildings:
- Ovans Family Home: Originally built in 1903 and bricked in 1906, this home was constructed with 8,000 bricks for $100, with bricklaying done by Mr. W. Nicholson for $96. The house also served as the area's first post office when John Ovans was appointed postmaster at Fitzmaurice in 1895. Now restored to its original exterior, the interior retains period furnishings displayed in their original settings.
- Christ Lutheran Church: Built in 1905, the church reflects the diverse cultural roots of the community, having served settlers from various countries. It now stands on the museum grounds as a testament to the role of faith and community in Kipling’s early development.
- Pipestone Lake Schoolhouse: A typical one-room school that represents early education in rural Saskatchewan.
- Blacksmith Shop: Demonstrates the tools and techniques of a once-essential trade.
- Dental Office: Offers a glimpse into early medical practices in the region.
- Service Station: Complete with original Esso gas pumps, showcasing the evolution of local transportation and commerce.
