Exploring the Abandoned Two-Storey Wooden Schoolhouse in Stornoway, Saskatchewan

A Forgotten Prairie Landmark: Step Inside the History and Decay of a Century-Old Schoolhouse

We have visited countless schoolhouses on the prairies. Most are one-storey buildings built of wood, brick, and sometimes fieldstone. Imagine our surprise when we discovered this two-story wooden schoolhouse in the small town of Stornoway, Saskatchewan. It was years ago when we first visited this school and we continued to visit when we were in the area. It was always secured and not much changed. A unique piece of history.

A few years ago we stopped by and the door had been pried off. Although sad to see this type of vandalism, this was our opportunity to document the inside. Based on the interior we could see that after it was done being a school it was used by the community before being abandoned. We took the time to do a full walkthrough inside with photos and video and we put the door back as best we good. It was thankfully sealed up not long after our visit.
