Abandoned Mazenod School

A look inside the long-abandoned multi-classroom school that once served the small community of Mazenod, Saskatchewan.

In the small community of Mazenod, a quiet reminder of rural Saskatchewan’s educational past once stood along the prairie landscape. The abandoned Mazenod School, a multi-classroom building that likely served students from kindergarten through Grade 12, was once a central part of daily life in the community.

Unlike the many one-room schoolhouses scattered across the province, Mazenod’s school was a larger facility built to accommodate multiple grades under one roof. Schools like this often served not only as places of learning but also as gathering points for local events and activities in small prairie communities.

When we explored the building, most of the classrooms had long since been cleared out. The hallways and rooms were largely empty, giving the school an eerie, quiet atmosphere. However, a few pieces of machinery remained behind, suggesting that at some point after its closure the building had been repurposed as a shop or workspace.

Today, the structure no longer stands. The school has since been demolished, leaving little trace of the place where generations of students once gathered to learn. Like many rural schools across Saskatchewan, its disappearance reflects the gradual changes that reshaped small prairie communities as populations declined and education became centralized in larger towns.

Although the building is gone, documenting places like Mazenod School helps preserve the memory of these once-important community landmarks before they disappear from the landscape entirely.
