Manresa School #1809 played an important role in the lives of rural Saskatchewan families for more than half a century. First opened in 1907, the school was originally known as Sinnett School before officially changing its name to Manresa in 1916. Like many prairie schools, it was the heart of its community educating children, hosting events, and bringing neighbours together.
In 1934, disaster struck when a fire destroyed the original school building. Determined not to lose this vital community space, residents rebuilt the school, ensuring that education could continue for local children. Over the years, improvements were added, including a teacherage built in 1953, providing living quarters for educators in this rural area. Power was brought to the school the following year, modernizing the building and daily school life.
For many students, education extended beyond Manresa’s walls. Some older students walked often referred to as going by “shank pony” to attend high school in Sinnett until a school bus service began in 1957. When Manresa School eventually closed in 1960, all remaining students were bused to Sinnett, while senior students continued their education in Lanigan.
Even after its closure, Manresa School remained an important social centre for the surrounding community. Dances, meetings, and gatherings kept the building alive with activity, leaving behind fond and cherished memories for generations who passed through its doors. Today, Manresa School #1809 stands abandoned as a reminder of Saskatchewan’s rural education history and the strong community spirit that defined life on the prairies.
